Questions

Which books does Leforio open?
EPUB files without DRM. Books protected by DRM, other formats (PDF, FB2, MOBI and so on) and damaged files are refused with a message.
How do I import books?
In the library tap Add Books and choose Import EPUB… to pick one or more files in the Files app, or use Open in Leforio from another app. EPUB books kept as folders, as Apple Books stores them, can be chosen too. The same book imported twice is recognised and added once. With an empty library you can tap Add Sample Book to try Leforio.
A book was refused
Check that the file is an EPUB and is not protected by DRM. Leforio shows the reason for each refused file and still imports the other books you chose with it. If a book you believe is a valid DRM-free EPUB is refused, write to support and describe where the file came from; do not attach the book.
Do I need an account?
No. Leforio has no accounts of its own and works offline. Some optional features use Apple services and need a connection: iCloud Sync, and downloading translation languages or voices.
How does iCloud Sync work?

iCloud Sync is optional and off until you turn it on: open Library Settings (top left of the library) and switch on iCloud Sync. You need an iPhone or iPad signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on each device.

Synced: the books in your library (their EPUB files), reading positions, bookmarks, highlights with their notes, and the font chosen for each book. Not synced: theme, text size, brightness and the other reading settings, search results and the reader log.

The data is stored in your own private iCloud database. Changes may take a while to reach your other devices; Leforio does not promise instant delivery. The status in Library Settings shows Syncing…, Up to date or what is wrong, with Try Again where it helps. If iCloud is full, signed out or restricted, Leforio says so and keeps working with the books on the device. If the Apple Account on the device changes, iCloud Sync turns off and your books on the device stay; turn it on again to use the new account.

Turning iCloud Sync off keeps every book on the device and everything already in iCloud. To delete what Leforio keeps in iCloud, use Remove from All Devices… for a book, or Settings › Apple Account › iCloud › Manage Storage on the device.

Removing books

Press and hold a book in the library. What you see depends on iCloud Sync:

  • Remove from Library (iCloud Sync off): removes the book from this device only.
  • Remove Download (iCloud Sync on): the EPUB leaves this device; the book, your position and bookmarks stay and it downloads again when you open it.
  • Remove from All Devices… (iCloud Sync on): after a confirmation, deletes the book, its position, bookmarks and highlights from this device and from your iCloud; your other devices remove it when they sync.
Moving to a new device
Turn on iCloud Sync on both devices, or restore your Apple device backup if your backups include Leforio. Backups are made and stored by Apple, according to your settings, and Leforio and Eleli LLC cannot restore or recover books or reading data for you. Keep your original EPUB files.
Reading settings
Tap the page to show the controls, then Aa. Choose Easy or Regular mode, text size, theme and font (kept for each book), vertical scrolling and brightness; under Advanced, publisher styles, line spacing, hyphenation, alignment, margins and the brightness swipe. Contents holds chapters, bookmarks and highlights, and About the Book.
Translate, Look Up and Listen

Select text on the page. Look Up opens the system dictionary. Translate needs iOS 17.4 or later; on iOS 18 and later Leforio shows its own translation card, which uses Apple’s Translation, lets you change the source and target languages, and shows the sentence around your selection as context. The language you choose is remembered for the next translation.

If the languages for a translation are not on your device yet, the system offers to download them. Some languages, including Ancient Greek, are not supported by Apple’s Translation; the card says so and offers another language, Google Translate, or copying the text.

Open in Google Translate opens Google’s website in your browser with the selected text; Leforio asks you to confirm the first time, because the text goes to Google. A very long selection is copied instead and Google Translate opens empty, for you to paste it.

Listen reads the selected text aloud with a voice installed on your device, in the text’s language. If there is no voice for it, add one in Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices. Reading stops when the card closes, when the book closes or when the app goes to the background.

Exporting highlights and notes
Open Contents, choose Highlights and tap Export. Leforio creates a Markdown file with your highlighted passages and notes and hands it to the system share sheet; you choose where it goes. The file contains quotes from the book, so share it with care.
Reporting a problem and the reader log

Open Contents › About the Book › Diagnostics. Share Reader Log prepares a short text log that you can attach to your message to support through the share sheet. It lists the app version, your device model and iOS version, taps on the page and what the reader did with them, page sizes, settings changes, actions chosen and positions in the book (file names inside the book and percentages), for this session and the one before. It does not contain book text, quotes or notes. It stays on your device and is sent nowhere unless you share it; Clear Reader Log deletes it.

Deleting my data

Leforio’s data is on your device and, if you turned on iCloud Sync, in your private iCloud. We do not hold it. To delete it: remove your books (see above), turn off iCloud Sync and delete Leforio’s data in Settings › Apple Account › iCloud › Manage Storage, then delete the app from your device. Copies in Apple device backups are managed in your Apple settings. If you wrote to support, see Privacy: contacting support.
